Many schools don't have the resources for makerspaces or 3D printers, so in order to make these essential STEAM skills more widely available, PrinterForm transforms any standard inkjet or laser printer into a 3D printer. We will build upon this prototype, as we add more forms, more features for teachers, and more educational resources for CAD modeling, with the hope of a public release sometime in the spring. We will be integrating user feedback into our next iteration, so try it out, and let us know what you think by filling out our feedback form. Bull says that a facility like the workshop is a unique position to contribute in this current situation. It isn’t set up for mass production, but what it can do is produce small runs of items that are tailored to specific circumstances. Margaret works out of our Aspen studio and serves as a Board Member of The Cultural Landscape Foundation. She has spoken at the National ASLA conference in 2016 about women in Landscape Architecture and in 2019 about integrating security in site design. Margaret received her Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Virginia. Darla, a landscape architect and planner in our Aspen studio, enjoys leading teams and clients through complex projects, knowing that listening is the most critical element for success. She guides them through all project phases—from conception to implementation—managing visioning, jurisdictional approvals, community engagement processes, site design, and documentation with a balance of patience and determination.

She is committed to co-creating with clients and stakeholders and bringing a strong sense of empathy to her collaborative process. Throughout his forty-year career, Kurt has been a recognized thought leader in the landscape architecture, land planning, and urban design disciplines. He is passionate about the firm and the profession, and is committed to bringing integrity, depth of inquiry, and excellence to all we do. As a Technical Principal in the Denver studio, Jake’s oversight and guidance focuses on design software, documentation and construction implementation. He brings rigor and technical acuity, coupled with an innate ability for community facilitation and education, providing a holistic approach to all of his projects.

Based in our Houston office, Brian is a senior urban designer with over 12 years of experience in community design, planning and landscape architecture. He believes that design is a process and a way of discovery that serves to reconnect us with what matters most. Through his natural talents for team building, big idea thinking, and visualization he is a trusted leader in the design and management of projects.

While “the Brown Design Workshop is used a lot by particularly engineering, visual art and architecture students at Brown,” the BDW is working to “publicize to everyone who wants to build,” said BDW Monitor Arjun Khurana ’25. During busy parts of the semester, Laser cutting jobs will be capped at 30 minutes. 3D Printing jobs are capped 6 hours before 10 pm, and 12 hours after 10 pm until closing. If you start a print before 2 pm on a day that the BDW is open, your print will be cancelled by the monitors on opening shift. Unlike many makerspaces at other institutions, which restrict use to students in certain degree programs or classes, the BDW opens its doors to everyone. Students from all walks of life, backgrounds, concentrations, and interests use the space alongside staff, faculty, and even those from the local community.

A recognized leader, Jeff is past president of the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a member of the Urban Land Institute. He studied landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota, where he received an ASLA Honor Award. His continuing education includes the Executive Leadership Program at Harvard University and the Colorado Center for Creative Leadership. Currently serving as Design Workshop's Chief Financial Officer, Mike plays a critical role in the firm's financial management and strategic decision-making. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the Wirtschafts Universität in Vienna, Austria and is a Fellow of Dumbarton Oaks and the Bogliasco Foundation.

The Brown Design Workshop is the University’s go-to makerspace where its members can use the vast array of tools and machines to create almost anything they dream up. The intro to the sheet metal workshop teaches member all of the non-power sheet metal working tools by building a pencil box. The tools taught in the workshop are the foot shear, finger brakes, notcher, metal shears, bench punch, hand punch, and riveters. Overall, the workshop provides members with a better sense of the metal working tools available and trains them how to use the tools effectively to complete projects.

“It’s a space where people are really kind to each other, kind to themselves, and kind to the things they’re creating. Everyone loves to come here to work, teach, and learn from each other—to create something together. It’s the first time in my life I’ve seen it to this degree,” says Arjun Khurana ’25. Typically, workshops cover skills for a specific tool, workshop and tool safety as well as best practices.

They both are committed to broadening their reach to all non-male-identifying students — not just those with STEM experience — in any way that they can. Gutierrez said Women Build at Brown hopes to eventually collaborate with other clubs and organizations in the Providence community and even make its way to other campuses. “There aren’t many spaces on campus where hands-on learning is valued, so we really want to bring in more students where they can channel their creative outlet with their hands,” Manager Amick Sollenberger ’24 said.
